tile is a sludgy, heavy, noise-y project that has released a bunch of seven inches and a pair of cassettes in the past couple years and they all rip. Most are limited runs of 100 or less and pretty hard to come by, but all are worth tracking down. The demo was reviewed on here in the past (although when I used the search function, it couldn't find it), but it is probably my favorite material from tile, besides the LP, which has been uploaded for your listening pleasure.

The LP "Welcome to Ditchyourfriendsville" had a press run of 208 copies, with some pressed on green and others on black through Limited Appeal Records in the spring of '09. The record is heavy as hell and one-sided, with the other side etched with some artwork by Eric DeJesus. Included is the track "Free Pizza, Haircuts" which was recorded on CD for the record release show and shows up as the first track on the dl, so it sounds a lot clearer than the other tracks. The rip isn't the best, with a lot of hiss during certain tracks, but it's worth it to hear this record. "Poison" into "Rail Tapper" into "Murder House" is such a brutal combo, I could listen over and over and over again. The good news is tile has another new seven inch coming out, which hopefully means there will be some shows in the future. Stay up to date with them here.

Limited Appeal has a shit ton of cool records, and if you haven't heard about the Seth Putnam collabo, you need to check it out on their site. Go get this LP and the other tile records L.A. has.

Mystery Juice

The tile record release show exceeded all expectations as far as I was concerned. In fact, my only complaint would be that due to my advanced age that a) all of my friends who go to shows have moved out of the lehigh valley or b) are no longer interested in DIY shows. What that means is having to attend shows solo, which kind of sucks, but I am getting used to it.

Before tile, Middle America played and they sounded tight. The last time I saw them, their set was like a lightning strike: fast, energetic and over quickly. This time they were a lot more comfortable winding through songs, abusing their equipment and really turning out a solid set.

tile's set proved to be even more impressive. This was the first time I have seen tile live and they are clearly a band to be seen live. All of their recorded material is good, but hearing them live is just crushing. Guitar, bass, drums, vocals were all in sync and created a rythmic drone that left the crowd banging their head or throwing their bodies around the room. tile played a good mix of new stuff and earlier songs all of which buzzed and blasted the crowd with their heavy groove. It was good to hear the familiar ones and the newer songs were some of their best stuff, particularly, "Murder House", which I thought was one of the best all night. Judging by the crowd reaction, they were just as impressed as I was.

Going back to the attending shows solo idea, I was a little hesistant to snap pictures which is weak I know. Anyway, here is a picture of the LP, put out by Limited Appeal Records. The thing is just massive in sound. The record sounds much bigger than their past recordings and it contains some of their best stuff to date. The one sided LP contains six tracks all of which fit together nicely into one complete package that will flatten you on your ass by the end. Seriously, it is that good. After only a couple spins, it surpasses "Adult Video Cassette" as my favorite tile release. The copies were coming with a CDR track, "Free Pizza, Free Haircuts", which is a bit different than the more serious tone of the songs on the LP, but equally good in its own right. Go to Limited Appeal, order one and stay psychadelic.

Somehow, in the recent glut of records coming in the mail, I missed giving this record its day in the sun. I was/am a more casual listener of Lickgoldensky. I've listened to Enjoy Terror or the Beautiful Sounds... their fair share of times, but not as much as some other Lehigh Valley stalwarts that are in constant rotation on my record player. Anway, this record is the demo, recorded in '98, put on to vinyl as a split release from the Lehigh Valley label Square of Opposition Records and the new label Hardcore is Dead out of Rochester. The demo sounds great: a lot more punishing, chaotic and heavier than the bands' other releases and that's saying a lot if you haven't heard them. The vocals and recording are really raw, which it my opinion makes it sound all the better. I suggest getting in contact with Square of Opposition and ordering up a copy or two on multiple colors of vinyl.


Perhaps the most charming part of the release is the inclusion of the lyrics sheet. I haven't read "feel good" lyrics like these since Eyehategod:

New Slab of Fresh Meat

Just got this record in the mail the other day from Breathing Problem Productions. Fresh Meat features members from a bunch of other bands,but don't really sound like any of their previous projects. It doesn't really matter anyway because this record is really good on its own. Initially, I had gotten a hold of their "Summer Blowout" demo and really liked what I heard. This record pretty much picks up where that left off. If you are into Brainbombs, Pissed Jeans or Drunkdriver you should be really into this. A side has "Sweat Her" and the B side track in entitled "Man or Woman" and both songs clock in around three to four minutes. BPP describes it as disgusting and negative music, but trust me, its in a really good way. This is one of the bands that I hope to see live this year.


My copy came with a cassette as well...part of the pre-order package and it wasn't even broken!

Sit Back and Relax

A bunch of recent releases have popped up that are worth talking about in the coming weeks. The above in the actual cover for tile's seven inch on Limited Appeal Records. It was originally released in a "rejected press" format with just the record, but the pressing was done officially now as well. These are/were limited to 100 while the rejected press was around 96 I think. Heavy, loud, noisey and so good. They have a one-sided LP on the way with an etching done by McStyles aka Eric DeJesus on the other side. I cannot wait to hear it.
