Turn Away
Some video from one of the Floorpunch shows from the Japanese Tour. Singalongs by the crowd= D- with crowd participation F-. I think there is one stagedive total. There are some great techniques by the audience to fake their way through the songs and to make up for the lack of enthusiasm:
A) Move your mouth to make it appear you know the words
B) Drum on your chest
C) Bob your head deeply and never look up
D) Don't make eye contact with Porter
E) Look behind you to see if others know the words
I may have missed some. Outburst intro into Rise and Fall into is in there too. Wish I could have been at these in person, but job, money and other first world problems.

Payday
Waves today. A few randoms...
Motivational terminology
Notice the lack of footprints on the steps. First one there.
Ended up at a spot I haven't surfed since the summer. I was alone and it was really fun.

One Crazy Day
It's probably a dumb idea to post this, considering it was posted on FB already, and I'd imagine most people saw it there, but as most white dudes say: Whatever (according to Samuel Jackson in "Lakeview Terrace"). Anyway, One California Day has got to be one of the better surf DVDs of this century. It's clean enough to draw in the older set and has enough younger longboards to draw in the younger crowd. Throw in automatic surf-cred providers like Tudor, Frye and Curren and well...you already know this stuff. This reel is a promo video with some new shots included. Definitely worth checking out.
Upon starting the video, you'll recognize the song as a different version of the same annoying song from the full length movie. It's not my cup of tea. I included one of my favorite pop punk songs from my early high school days as a replacement option. Just start it up as there is the first sign of a surfboard on the screen. Should be a good substitute to the rootsy, bluesy rock that I can't stand. If that's your thing, then leave it.

Cash Still Rules
These days I'm more impressed with the bands of my youth who don't do reunion tours, open merch stores and repress their back catalogs. It's cool to see bands that I missed because I was four years old at the time or because I was on a date with a girl or at my uncle's birthday party or something, but part of me feel like the secret's out on the difference between doing a couple reunion shows in '10s as opposed to the '90s. That's not necessarily a bad thing. The means of communication and information of today make things better for everyone involved when you think about it.
There's a lot of micro-arguments within the whole reunion show debate: original members, locations of shows, fest vs. show, etc., but for the most part it's gotta be a great opportunity for the bands anyway you look at it. I'm not complaining, just commenting. The fact that I don't have to wait for a record to arrive at a record store to hear it or base my purchase of CDs or records on the description that they got in the Very Distro catalog makes things a lot easier for the hardcore consumer as well. I've got to say that I could count on one hand bands that would surprise me if they decided to reunite. You can probably guess who they are.

The Final Mosh-Uncut
Full set:
Beyond stoked on seeing this footage. Someone needs to cut a DVD will live sets and band interviews of all the stories from the late 90s. Go.

Idiotic
After about six inches or so of snow yesterday, I took a shot at there being a little swell left around this morning before the forty mph winds and NFL games drove me straight into my couch. It was super cold and the roads in Ocean City were pretty sketchy early on, but I soldiered on, hoping to at least grab a few before hypothermia set in. The night before I had been listening to Mental and appropriately enough, I had "I'm a fuckin' idiot, I'm a fuckin' idiot" bouncing around in my head as I scrambled up the steps to first street.
I could stare at the ocean all day and never get bored. I'm not sure this picture even does this morning justice, but I knew my time was limited. Saw a few little waves rolling in, and knew the wind would beat it down pretty quickly, so I grabbed my gear and headed for the beach. Maybe I headed out too quickly, because in my attempt to navigate the drop at the shoreline, I realized that the one section was just a snow drift and consequently fell forward into the snow without my gloves on yet.
There were a couple nicely lined-up waves, but overall, I was fighting a losing battle. The tide was filling in, the winding was blowing out whatever swell was left and my body's core temperature was slowly dropping by the minute. I grabbed one last microwave after what felt like an hour long wait and headed it. I was still very clad to get out and get to have 1st all to myself at least one day out of 365.

Brought Back to Life
Day 1:
Day 2:
DIY or die. Or have Vans sponsor you and claim DIY. Regardless, this is one of the more interesting contests I have seen and makes me excited about the surfing world outside of myself and the local yocals that frequently surf south jersey.

Into Oblivion
First session of the New Year sucked. Small, wrong tide and no push. The outlook for the week isn't looking much better, but still hoping for a good January with a couple systems pushing through some decent swell.
